Vocational training allowance

For certain professions, you are entitled to a vocational training allowance (BAB).

  • Detailed description

    Trainees are entitled to a vocational training allowance (BAB) during vocational training or pre-vocational training.

    Note: These are only professions according to the Vocational Training Act or the Crafts Code. Occupations after full-time schooling do not touch each other.

    BAB is paid as a subsidy. Therefore, you do not have to pay them back.

  • Requirements

    Personal requirements:

    • German citizenship
      Foreign applicants can be funded in individual cases. Let us advise you on this.
    • You own your own apartment because the training company is too far away from your parents' home.
      • Exception: If you live close to your parents' home under the following circumstances, you will also receive BAB:
        • You are older than 18 years or
        • You are married (or were married) or
        • You have at least one child with whom you live or
        • They cannot live in their parents' home for serious social reasons.
    • You will not be able to raise the necessary funds to cover the following costs:
      • Cost of living
      • Travel expenses between accommodation and training centre or vocational school, family trips home
      • Workwear
      • Learning resources
      • Childcare costs

    Requirements for the promotion of vocational training:

    Your vocational training is eligible if:

    • you are undergoing training in a recognised training occupation (in-company or external),
    • you have concluded an apprenticeship contract,
    • your training contract has been entered in the training register,
    • this is your first training.
      Only in a few exceptional cases can BAB be considered for a second training.

    Requirements for the funding of a pre-vocational training measure:

    • It prepares students for the start of training or serves as a means of professional integration.
      It must not be subject to the school laws of the federal states.
    • It can be expected that vocational training will be successful due to:
      • the training and professional experience of the management staff as well as the training and support staff,
      • the design of the curriculum, the teaching method, and
      • the quality of the teaching and learning materials intended for use.
    • It is planned according to the principles of economy and economy.
    • It is carried out on behalf of the Employment Agency.
    • The cost is reasonable.

    The competent authority will provide information on any other required documents.

  • Process

    BAB is granted upon application. You must submit this in writing. The necessary form is available from the competent authority.

    You can also submit the application after the start of the measure. In this case, the BAB will only be granted retroactively from the beginning of the month in which you submitted the application.

    The competent authority will decide on the application and inform you of the result in writing. In the case of vocational training, the decision on entitlement is normally made for 18 months, otherwise for one year. After that, you will have to apply for the benefits again.

    Pre-vocational training measures can:

    • also include general education subjects in order to facilitate professional integration (the proportion of general education subjects may not predominate),
    • prepare for the subsequent acquisition of the lower secondary school leaving certificate or
    • can be combined with an internship.
