  • Detailed description

Cars, motorcycles and other vehicles must be regularly inspected. Without a valid technical inspection, you are not allowed to drive your vehicle on public transport. This applies to motor vehicles that are subject to registration.

As the vehicle owner, you are responsible for registering your vehicle for the technical inspection in good time. You will not receive a request from the office for this, and you will also have to bear the costs yourself.

During the general inspection, it is checked whether your vehicle is still in good condition.

    • roadworthy
    • in accordance with the regulations and
    • environmentally friendly

    drives.

The HU is usually colloquially called "TÜV", because in the past only the Technical Inspection Association (TÜV) was responsible. In the meantime, other organisations are also allowed to carry out the HU. In addition to the technical inspection centres, these include so-called officially recognised inspection organisations, for example:

    • the German Motor Vehicle Surveillance Association (DEKRA),
    • the Society for Technical Supervision (GTÜ) or
    • the Motor Vehicle Inspection Organisation of Freelance Motor Vehicle Experts (KÜS).

Since 2010, the exhaust gas test (AU) has been part of the HU. The general "TÜV sticker" therefore replaces the hexagonal sticker on the front license plate. Recognised workshops can also carry out the AU before the HU, but no more than two months earlier.

The following items must be included in the vehicle during an inspection:

    • First aid kit (be sure to check the expiration date),
    • Warning triangle
    • High-visibility vest,
    • Charging cable
    • towbar, if it is removable, and
    • all seats, if they are removable.

If you want to make sure that you do not have to go to the inspection due to minor defects, you should first check that the following car parts are working and undamaged:

    • License plates (must be clearly visible and securely attached),
    • headlights, lights and reflectors,
    • Safety belts
    • tyre tread depth (at least 1.6 millimetres),
    • windshield wipers/windshield washers,
    • Interior and exterior mirrors,
    • indicator lights in the vehicle,
    • Windscreen
    • Horn and
    • Exhaust.

    Hints:

    • The inspection report must be submitted when registering and re-registering a vehicle.
    • First aid kit and warning triangle must be carried for the general inspection.
  • Requirements

    none

    • Registration Certificate Part I (formerly Vehicle Registration Document)
    • in the case of non-registered motor vehicles: registration certificate Part II (formerly vehicle registration document)

    • In the case of retrofitting installations: General operating permit for vehicle parts or international approvals for vehicle parts
  • Fees

  • Process

You must make an appointment for the HU in person.

    • Find out about local testing centres and make an appointment.
    • Bring all the necessary documents and pay for the examination.
    • After your inspection, you will receive a written examination report. If no significant deficiencies have been identified, you will receive
      • an inspection stamp with the deadline until the next inspection in the vehicle registration document and
      • an inspection sticker that is affixed to the rear license plate. The sticker also shows the year and month of the next due inspection date.
    • If the inspection body finds significant or dangerous defects, you must bring the vehicle in for inspection within one month.
      • Even if you have one month between the inspection and the inspection, you must remedy any defects found immediately after the inspection.
      • If you miss the one-month deadline, you will have to repeat the HU.
    • If your vehicle is no longer roadworthy, the inspection sticker will be removed from your vehicle and you will no longer be allowed to use it.

Note: You can also be represented by an authorized person.

  • Duration

Carrying out HU: about 30 minutes (without possible waiting times) for a passenger car.

  • Deadline

The date for the next inspection can be seen on the inspection sticker.
The deadlines that apply to you depend on the class of vehicle.
