  • Detailed description

Professionals who want to obtain a higher school leaving certificate at a later date can regularly take advantage of educational opportunities at schools of the second chance education (ZBW) or locations with school-leaving certificate-related courses in various ways. Those who are employed at the time of commencement of classes attend evening classes part-time, with a slightly reduced course. Part-time courses are offered at secondary levels I and II. Those who are not employed attend a full-time course for upper secondary education. The duration of the course depends on the desired school leaving certificate and the existing school education. Participation in classes is compulsory. The absence will only be excused if there are valid reasons. For teaching at institutions of the second chance education, the school holidays for the state of Brandenburg apply. The qualifications of the second chance education are recognized in all countries in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The following degrees can be obtained:

    • Secondary school leaving certificate/vocational training entrance qualification (completion of grade 9) and extended secondary school leaving certificate/extended vocational training maturity (completion of grade 10)
    • Realschulabschluss/Fachoberschulreife (graduation from grade 10), school-based part of the advanced technical college entrance qualification (graduation after grade 12)
    • general university entrance qualification (Abitur; Graduation from grade 13)

The full-time course is aimed at non-working people. Classes therefore take place during the day. The following degrees can be obtained:

    • school-based part of the advanced technical college entrance qualification (leaving after the general university entrance qualification (Abitur; Graduation from grade 13)

Anyone who cannot or does not want to attend school regularly and is aiming for the Fachoberschulreife (intermediate school leaving certificate) or the Fachhochschulreife can take part in the Telekolleg. Without attending a school institution, school-leaving qualifications can only be obtained through a so-called non-pupil examination.

  • Requirements

Admission to the course of study for the subsequent acquisition of the technical secondary school entrance qualification may be granted to those who:

    • has reached the age of 18,
    • is employed or has been employed for at least six months, and
    • can provide proof of a lower secondary school leaving certificate/vocational training entrance qualification or an equivalent qualification or has completed full-time compulsory schooling.

Marginally paid employment according to § 8 paragraph 1 number 1 of the Fourth Book of the Social Code is also considered to be a professional activity. Periods of military or civilian service, periods under the Youth Voluntary Service Act or the Federal Voluntary Service Act are recognised. The management of a family household is equivalent to professional activity. Unemployment proven by a certificate from the employment agencies can be taken into account for up to three months. In individual cases, the admission requirements in number 2 may be waived for applicants who, due to special biographical circumstances, are unable to improve their chances of access to vocational training or qualifying professional practice without access to the second chance education, as long as this does not change the orientation of a course of study tailored to students with professional experience as such.
