  • Detailed description

You can obtain a residence permit to carry out a qualification measure if a recognition procedure has been carried out at a body responsible in Germany for the recognition of professional qualifications and the recognition body has determined that the qualification measures are necessary for the

    • determining the equivalence of your foreign professional qualification with a domestic professional qualification or
    • for the granting of a license to practice a profession (access to a profession) in a profession regulated in Germany.

    are required.

Regulated professions are those for whose access and practice special professional qualifications had to be acquired, such as for doctors, architects, pharmacists. To find out whether your profession is regulated in Germany, which laws govern it and which office you should contact to check your qualifications, visit the information portal "Recognition in Germany" (see "Further information").

Qualification measures include adaptation and compensation measures in theoretical and practical form (internships in the company, theoretical courses, mixed forms), preparatory courses for examinations and language courses.

You can pursue employment not limited in time as a supplement to the implementation of a qualification measure if the intended activity during the recognition procedure is related to the professional knowledge required in the later employment. Such a connection exists, for example, if you want to have your foreign medical training recognized and already want to work as a nursing assistant during the qualification measure, or if you already want to work as a bricklayer or, for example, as a construction helper during the qualification measure to become a bricklayer.

For regulated professions, a professional practice permit must have been issued or promised. The professional practice permit includes the professional law authorization to practice the profession as well as the granting of permission to use the professional title.

The residence permit to carry out a qualification measure with employment is a temporary residence title. It is issued for the duration of the qualification measure, but for a maximum of 18 months.
