BAföG educational support enables young people to complete a school or university education that corresponds to their abilities and interests, regardless of their social and economic situation.

You can receive educational support if, as a pupil or student, you are otherwise unable to raise the necessary funds for your livelihood and education.

In the event of need, the amount of support depends on your income and assets and on the income of your parents or your spouse or registered partner. In principle, the support is family-dependent.

General requirements:

• German citizen
  foreign citizen depending on residence status
• They must not be older than 30 years at the start of the training (exceptional case regulation possible for over 30-year-olds)
• Your own income and assets, as well as the income of your parents and, if applicable, your spouse or registered partner, are not sufficient to finance your education

A distinction is made between the following cases:

1. Initial application: parent-dependent and parent-independent support
2. Repetition application: parent-dependent and parent-independent support
3. Update requests

Depending on the type of educational support, further requirements may be met.

• Formal application
• School certificate, certificate of enrollment or proof of internship
• Proof of income of the parents and, if applicable, the spouse or partner
• Tax assessment from the penultimate calendar year

if there is no tax assessment:

• Printout of the electronic income tax certificate from the penultimate calendar year
• If applicable, certificate from the responsible tax office on tax-free annual income from the penultimate calendar year

The competent authority will inform you if further documents are required.

There are no costs.
 
You have to repay the part of the BAföG (50%) granted as a loan after graduation (max. 10,010 euros).

Student BAföG does not have to be repaid as a full grant without a loan component.
 

If you want to apply for BAföG to attend school, you usually have to submit your application to the Office for Educational Support in whose district your parents have their permanent residence. The offices for educational support are set up at the district administrations and the administrations of the independent cities.

If you want to apply for BAföG for a course of study, you must submit your application to the Office for Educational Support of the respective university.

If you want to apply for BAföG for an internship, the responsibility depends on whether the internship is related to school or university attendance. The Office for Educational Support, which is responsible for the promotion of school or higher education, is also responsible for promoting the traineeship.

If you want to apply for BAföG for an apprenticeship abroad (school, university or a related internship), please contact the Central International Offices for Educational Support (which vary depending on the destination country).

You will receive BAföG at the earliest from the beginning of the month in which you start training, but only after you have also submitted an application. The date of receipt of the mail is considered the date of application.

As a rule, educational support is granted for a period of twelve months. After that, you will have to submit an application for further funding. In order to avoid interruptions in payments, you should submit the application for further funding at least two months before the end of the approval period of the previous application.
