  • Detailed description

In a burial, the deceased person is buried in the ground in a cemetery. Some sponsors of the cemetery also allow burial in a crypt or an above-ground grave building.

The cemetery regulations usually require that the burial take place in a coffin. If the religion of the deceased person prohibits burial in a coffin, the cemetery owner may grant an exception to the coffin requirement.

There are different types of burial sites (elective grave, row grave, communal facilities). The respective cemetery operator decides on the offer. An important difference between an elective grave and a row grave is that in the case of a row grave, an extension of the right of use is not possible and that row graves are usually more cost-effective. Also, only one person can be buried in a row grave site at a time, so that relatives must be buried later in one place.

The location and size of the grave, the rest period, the duration of the right of use, fees and other details (e.g. grave care) are determined by the respective cemetery administration by statute (= cemetery regulations, cemetery fee statutes).

Note: Most formalities are usually handled by the funeral home hired. There you will also receive reverent advice. Before placing an order, ask for an explanation of the services and prices offered.

    • the coffin
    • the funeral home.

If you hold a funeral service, there will be additional costs, e.g. for the funeral hall, the person giving the funeral speech, catering, etc.).

The amount of the costs depends on the type of burial and must be obtained from the funeral home commissioned by you and the owner of the cemetery where the burial is to take place.

If you cannot afford the costs, contact your local social welfare office quickly.

  • Process

Quickly hire a funeral home you trust to carry out a funeral in accordance with the law. He will take care of everything else.

  • Deadline

A funeral may take place no earlier than two days after the occurrence of death. The burial must be carried out within ten days of death. The lower health authority (= county) can allow an earlier burial for religious reasons or order it for reasons of hygiene. It may also allow a later burial if there are no hygienic reasons to the contrary.
