Appointment of a responsible person authorized to issue instructions to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Animal Welfare Act Obligation

Do you or your employees slaughter, stun or bleed animals commercially? If so, you must appoint a responsible person with authority to issue instructions for reasons of animal welfare.

    If you

    • as the operator of a slaughterhouse or as a professional slaughter at least 50 livestock units on average per week, or
    • provide workers who feed, stun or bleed animals for slaughter,

    you must designate a person responsible for compliance with the requirements of the Animal Welfare Act to the competent authority.

    you must designate a person responsible for compliance with the requirements of the Animal Welfare Act to the competent authority.

    In individual cases, operators of the following animal husbandries, establishments and plants may also be required to designate a responsible person authorised to issue instructions:

    • Livestock farms including horse farms,
    • establishments in which
      • animal experiments are carried out
      • interventions or treatments carried out on animals for the purposes of education, training or further training,
      • interventions or treatments are carried out on vertebrate animals for the production, extraction, storage or reproduction of substances, products or organisms,
      • the removal, in whole or in part, of organs or tissues from vertebrate animals for the purpose of transplantation or culture, or for the examination of isolated organs, tissues or cells, or
      • vertebrate animals are killed for scientific purposes or for the purposes of education, training or further training,
      • Establishments and operations,
        • transporting animals for hire or reward
        • where animals are fed, cared for or housed during transport,
      • circuses which are not operated commercially.
