  • Detailed description

If there is a change of keeper, the previous keeper or owner must notify the competent registration authority immediately for the purpose of changing the vehicle register.

Depending on the services offered by the registration authority, a corresponding form is available for download.

A notification is not necessary if the purchaser has already informed the registration authority of the changes. The purchaser must notify the registration authority responsible for his place of residence or registered office of the new owner data and the vehicle data immediately after the change of owner and, on request, provide evidence of this, apply for a new registration certificate Part I and submit the registration certificate Part II for the change (transfer).

  • Documents

The notification must include the registration number of the vehicle, the surname, first name and full address of the purchaser and confirmation that the registration certificate has been handed over.

  • Fees

    None.

  • Deadline

The sale of a vehicle must be reported to the registration authority in writing without delay.

  • Responsible authority

Registration office of the district or independent city in whose district your main residence is located.

  • Legal basis

    Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV)

  • More information

If the previous keeper or owner fails to comply with their duty of notification, or if the vehicle is not immediately re-registered or taken out of service, or if the data provided by the new keeper or owner proves to be incorrect, the registration authority may require the registration certificate to be submitted to it within four weeks. If the request is unsuccessful, the registration of the vehicle ends. The registration authority will notify the previous keeper or owner of the end of the registration.

It is strongly recommended that the buyer's details be checked using an identity card or passport. The seller remains the keeper of the vehicle after the sale until it has been transferred to a new keeper or taken out of service by the new keeper.

Ask the buyer to confirm receipt of the documents handed over (e.g. registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document), registration certificate part II (vehicle registration document), certificate of technical inspections carried out (HU, AU, if applicable also SP) as well as other documents such as installation approvals, special approvals, etc.) in writing.

If you are selling the vehicle abroad, you should definitely decommission the vehicle before selling it so that your keeper obligations (motor vehicle liability insurance, motor vehicle tax) are terminated. De-registration at a later date is time-consuming and expensive because the vehicle documents are usually no longer available.

The purchaser also has the option of taking the vehicle abroad in a way other than in a registered state (e.g. export license plates, transport vehicle and sometimes even with short-term license plates).
