Register animal exhibition, animal market or animal exchange

If you wish to hold events such as animal shows, animal fairs and animal exhibitions, you must notify the relevant administrative authority. For commercial purposes, you need a permit under animal protection law.

  • Detailed description

    If you wish to hold events such as animal shows, animal fairs and animal exhibitions, you must notify the relevant administrative authority. In addition, you need a permit under animal protection law if you

    • hold animal fairs for the purpose of exchanging or selling animals by third parties, or
    • commercially display animals or make them available for such purposes.

    For livestock shows, livestock markets and events of a similar nature, notification is required in accordance with the regulations of the Animal Health Act. "Livestock" in this sense includes, for example, domestic animals of the species horse, donkey, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, many species of poultry, enclosure game and camelids.

    Dog and cat shows must be notified if

    • dogs and cats from EU member states or third countries participate, or
    • the exhibition or event is to be held in a rabies-prone district.
  • Requirements
    • Dogs and cats must have effective vaccination protection against rabies.
    • Dangerous animals such as poisonous snakes or scorpions are not allowed at animal fairs.
    • Special restrictions apply to species-protected animals.

  • Process

    Register event in writing with the competent authority. This can be done either by a form provided by the authority, electronically or by informal application.

    The informal application should include the following items:

    • Details of the organizer and the person responsible
    • Place, time and period of the event
    • Information on the animals and species exhibited or offered for sale

    The venue to be used for the event will be inspected on site by the responsible veterinary authority. The permit to exhibit animals (possibly with conditions and restrictions) or the negative decision as well as the fee notice are usually sent by mail.

    Tip: Before applying, enquire at the competent authority about details of the requirements and the procedure; if available, you will also receive the application/notification form there.
