Driving licences in categories C, CE, C1 or C1E, D, DE, D1 or D1E shall be issued for a maximum period of five years and may be renewed for five-year periods at the request of the licence holder.

• Official proof of place and date of birth (e.g. identity card, passport)
• previous driving licence
• a current photograph which complies with the provisions of the Passport Ordinance (biometric, size 45 mm x 35 mm, portrait format)
• Proof of eyesight in accordance with the model in Annex 6 No. 2 to the Driving Licence Ordinance .
  The certificate can be issued by an ophthalmologist, by a company or occupational physician or by a physician from the public health department. An issued certificate is valid for 2 years.
  
• Proof of physical and mental aptitude in accordance with the model in Annex 5 to the Driving Licence Ordinance.
  You can have the certificate drawn up by any doctor. At the time of application, the certificate must not be older than one year.
  
• In addition, for classes D,D1, DE, D1E, if you have reached the age of 50, a performance psychology certificate. The certificate must not be older than one year at the time of application.

The fee shall be in accordance with the schedule of fees for road traffic measures as amended from time to time.

Please contact the driving licence authority responsible for your place of residence.

The application can be submitted at the earliest six months before the expiry of the previous driving licence.

Caution: If the application is not submitted until after the expiry of the previous driving licence, it will no longer be extended but a new driving licence will be issued. The fact that you were already the holder of a corresponding driving licence in the past will then no longer be evident from the new driving licence.

Regardless of whether it is a genuine renewal or a new issue (due to late application), a new driving licence is always issued.
