  • Detailed description

The activity as a teacher is regulated. This means that you must prove that you have a specific qualification if you want to work as a teacher in Germany without restrictions. To prove a foreign qualification, you can apply for recognition of your professional qualification.

In the recognition procedure, the competent authority compares your professional qualification from abroad with the professional qualification in the selected federal state. For recognition, your professional qualification must be equivalent.

You can also apply for the procedure from abroad.

In order to work as a teacher, you must meet other requirements in addition to the equivalence of your professional qualification. In most cases, you do not have to prove these requirements until you are hired as a teacher. That's a different procedure.

  • Requirements
    • You have a professional qualification as a teacher from abroad.
    • You want to work as a teacher in the chosen federal state.

In order to be recruited to the teaching profession, you must meet additional requirements:

    • You have German language skills at the required language level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The competent authority will inform you about the required language level.
    • Personal aptitude: You are reliable for working as a teacher and have no criminal record.
    • Health suitability: You are healthy.
  • Documents
    • Application form of the competent authority
    • If there is no application form: An informal and signed application
    • Proof of identity (passport or identity card)
    • Marriage certificate (if your name has changed due to marriage)
    • Curriculum vitae
    • Proof of your professional qualification (e.g. references, certificates, professional certificates)
    • Proof of content and duration of your education (e.g. Diploma Supplement, Transcript of Records, Study and Examination Regulations)
    • Proof of your other qualifications (e.g. professional training, seminars)
    • Proof of your professional experience as a teacher
    • Information about an application for recognition that has already been submitted. Then indicate to which office you submitted the application. If you have already received a notification of your application for recognition from the other body, please also submit this document.
    • Perhaps: Declaration or proof that you want to work in the profession in the chosen federal state. Evidence is, for example, applications for a job.

The competent authority will tell you which documents you must show in the original or submit as a copy. Some copies must be officially certified. We recommend that you do not send originals by post.

You must present your documents in German. The translations must be made by publicly appointed or authorized translators.

Other documents are usually important for employment in the teaching profession. You do not have to hand in these documents until you take a compensatory measure or when you are hired as a teacher.

    • Proof of your German language skills: Language certificate
    • Proof of your personal suitability:
Extended certificate of good conduct from Germany or your country of origin (e.g. extract from the criminal record, Certificate of Good Standing) not older than three months at the time of application
    • Proof of your health suitability (only for the compensatory measure): written personal declaration
    • Proof of vaccination or immunization against measles or vaccination intolerance by medical certificate if you were born after 31.12.1970.
  • Fees

You do not have to pay any fees for the procedure in the state of Brandenburg.

However, additional costs may arise (e.g. for translations or certifications of your documents). These costs vary from person to person and are to be borne by you.

  • Process

You submit an application to the competent authority. You can send the application by mail, send it electronically, or drop it off in person. The competent authority will inform you.

The competent authority receives the application. It will confirm to you after a maximum of one month that the application has arrived. When the competent authority has received all the documents from you, it will process your application. The competent authority then checks: Is your professional qualification equivalent to the professional qualification in your federal state? In doing so, the competent authority compares the qualifications with the help of certain criteria. Important criteria are, for example, the duration of the training, the content of the training and the number of subjects taught. The competent authority shall also take into account your professional experience, other qualifications and qualifications in the equivalence test.

If your professional qualification and the professional qualification in the chosen federal state are equivalent, you will receive recognition.

Sometimes there are significant differences between professional qualifications. Most of the time, if there are significant differences, you can make a compensatory measure.

    There are various compensatory measures:

    • Adaptation period: You work as a teacher and perhaps do additional training. This means, for example, that you take part in courses at a university.
    • Aptitude test: You will take lesson samples and oral exams. A teaching rehearsal means: You conduct lessons with students. Examiners observe and assess your lessons. The competent authority will inform you about necessary teaching samples and examinations.

In most cases, you can choose between an adaptation period or an aptitude test. Sometimes the competent authority decides which compensatory measure you should complete. The competent authority will inform you.

If you successfully complete the compensatory measure, you will receive recognition of your foreign teacher professional qualification as a teaching qualification.

With the recognition, you can apply for the school service in your state. This is a separate procedure. If you meet all the requirements, you will receive the teaching qualification. The teaching qualification is always valid for the requested teaching profession. This means that you can teach your subjects at a specific school. You have the same professional rights as a person with a German professional qualification.

In some cases, recognition of a professional teaching qualification as a teaching qualification is not possible. This is the case if:

    - the application documents are not submitted in full by you within a certain period of time despite being requested to do so by the competent authority,

    - you do not have a completed teaching qualification in your country of training, which was acquired at a university or comparable educational institution and entitles you to practise the profession of teacher in the state of training in at least one of the subjects approved for the desired teaching profession, or

    - the substantial differences found cannot be compensated.

Depending on the federal state, there are various ways to work as a teacher without recognition, e.g. at a private school. The competent authority will inform you of the details.

  • Duration

If the documents are complete, the processing will take a maximum of three months. This period can be extended once if there are special circumstances (e.g. when obtaining an expert opinion from the Central Office for Foreign Education [ZAB]). The competent authority will inform you of this.

  • Deadline

    None.

Sometimes documents are still missing in the procedure. The competent authority will then inform you by when you have to submit the documents.
