Take the fisherman's exam

  • Detailed description

    If you want to apply for a fishing license, you must first take and pass a fisherman's exam (angler's exam). You can take the exam at the lower fisheries authority (districts and independent cities) or at recognized bodies.

    The dates for registration for the fisherman's examination (angler's examination) as well as the day, time and place of the examinations shall be determined by the competent authorities as required and announced in an appropriate manner.

    The fisherman's exam (angler's exam) is a written exam in German. It comprises 60 questions, twelve questions each from the examination areas of fish science and conservation, management of fishing waters, fishing gear and its use, treatment of the fish caught and relevant legislation. The questions must be answered within two hours. The exam is considered passed if at least six questions and a total of at least 45 questions have been answered correctly in each of the examination areas.

    If you pass the exam, you will receive an exam certificate.

    In certain cases, you may be exempt from the exam (see notes / special features).

    The examination fee, including the issuance of a certificate, is 25.00 euros.

  • Process
    • You register with the competent authority for the fishing licence examination (angler's examination) and pay the examination fee.
    • If you are not admitted to the examination, you will receive a written notification from the competent authority.
    • After passing the exam, you will receive a certificate of successful participation.
    • With the certificate of passing the exam, you can apply for a fishing license at the competent lower fisheries authority.
    • You should then keep the examination certificate in order to be able to apply for a fishing license again if you lose your fishing license or, if necessary, if you move.
  • Responsible authority

    The lower fisheries authorities of the districts and independent cities are responsible. The recognized angler examiners are responsible for the angler's examination.

    The fisherman's examination (angler's examination) taken in Brandenburg is currently not recognised in all federal states. If you do not reside in Brandenburg, you should inquire about recognition in your home state before taking the exam.

    You are exempt from the fisherman's examination (angler's examination) if you:

    1. provide proof of completed vocational training in fishing

    2. have completed a training in fisheries science

    3. have successfully completed a special course and reached the age of eighteen as holders of fishing rights tied to certain waters or as a member of a traditional Spreewald fishing community

    4. have passed a fishing license examination in another federal state and can prove this.
