Detailed description
For women who want to keep their pregnancy and motherhood secret even after detailed psychosocial counselling, there is the possibility of confidential birth. It enables a protected and medically supervised delivery and guarantees mothers anonymity for 16 years. In the case of a confidential birth, counsellors accompany the women concerned even after the birth in order to assist them in resolving conflicts and to show them ways to live with a child. If the woman decides to give up the child permanently, it is given up for adoption. The affected children can then inquire about their origin from the age of 16.
With the confidential birth, the Federal Government has for the first time created a legally regulated offer for those affected and thus created security of action for pregnant women, counseling centers, clinics and authorities.
Confidential birth has been a legal alternative to anonymous birth in Germany since 2014. On 1 May 2014, the Act on the Expansion of Assistance for Pregnant Women and the Regulation of Confidential Childbirth came into force in Germany.

Fees
The Confederation assumes the costs incurred in connection with childbirth and pre- and aftercare (Section 34(1) of the Act on the Expansion of Assistance for Pregnant Women and on the Regulation of Confidential Birth).

Responsible authority
The confidential birth is a nationwide offer of help that you can take advantage of. There is no obligation to provide advice in a counselling centre close to home – you are free in your choice and not bound to a city or federal state. Uniform requirements apply everywhere in Germany.
