Activities with pathogens Display
If you start working with pathogens for the first time, you must first notify the State Office for Occupational Safety, Consumer Protection and Health (LAVG).

Detailed description
The term "pathogen" refers to pathogens capable of reproduction (viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites) or other biologically transmissible pathogens that can cause an infection or a transmissible disease in humans.
If you as the responsible person or permit holder intend to take up specific activities with pathogens (permit-free or subject to a permit), you must notify the LAVG.
The obligation to notify exists irrespective of whether the activities in question have already been notified previously and have already been carried out by another responsible person or permit holder, or whether they are new activities that have not yet been notified.
There is no obligation to notify employees who work under the supervision of a person who has the required permit for activities involving pathogens.
The LAVG checks the existing rooms, facilities and disposal measures.
Activities involving pathogens include in particular
- Experiments with pathogens capable of reproduction,
- microbiological tests and methods for the detection of pathogens subject to mandatory reporting,
- further breeding of pathogens,
- routine storage,
- release of pathogens or material containing pathogens,
- targeted enrichment or multiplication of pathogens.

- certified copy of the permit for activities with pathogens or information on the exemption from the permit pursuant to Section 45 IfSG for the intended activities
- Information on the type and scope of the intended commencement of activities and disposal measures
- List of employees/organizational chart
- Listing, classification and allocation of pathogens to risk groups
- Risk assessment
- Information on the condition of the rooms and facilities
- Information on hygiene management
If you submit the notification to the LAVG in writing, it must be signed by hand.

Fees
Fee for the initial commencement of activities in connection with the monitoring and control of activities involving pathogens: EUR 600.00-1,240

Process
Before you carry out activities involving pathogens, report them in writing or in person:
- An informal notification is sufficient.
- Attach the necessary supporting documents. The LAVG will provide you with information by e-mail about the documents to be submitted for processing the notification.
- Submit the notification and the required documents to the LAVG.

Duration
30 days after submission of the complete documents

Deadline
Notification period: The LAVG must be notified at least 30 days before the intended commencement of activities.
After this period has expired, the activity may commence unless it has been prohibited by the LAVG.
The deadline only begins when the LAVG has received all the necessary documents in full. -
