Whether you can be admitted to a German university depends on your previous education.

  • Detailed description

    You are a foreign national or stateless and would like to study in Germany. Then apply directly to the university where you want to study later or via uni-assist . This applies to all degree courses.

  • Requirements
    • a level of education equivalent to the German higher education entrance qualification (certificates or Studienkolleg assessment test),
    • language skills required for the course and, if applicable
    • the fulfillment of university-specific requirements.
  • Documents
    • Higher education entrance qualification that allows access to higher education in the country of origin (e.g. Matura, Baccalaureate, School Leaving Certificate, General Certificate of Education GCE) and the corresponding lists with individual grades
    • University or college certificates obtained (also from colleges, academies) and the corresponding lists with individual grades
    • Certificate of having passed the assessment test including overview of grades (if already taken)
    • Certificates or transcripts (including list of grades) for university entrance examinations passed abroad
    • Enrolment or study certificates (if available)
    • Proof of German language proficiency if the application is not exclusively for an English-language degree program
    • Curriculum vitae with a complete tabular overview of previous education

    Note: The respective university will inform you about the submission of further documents.

  • Process

    You usually apply for a study place online via the application portal of the respective university. You must also send a signed hard copy to the university in good time.

    You can request the "Application for admission to the first semester" and the application documents from the respective university. You can also find the application form on the website of the respective university.

    You must then submit the application and other required documents to the university by the deadline. This can often be done online. The university will decide on your admission and inform you accordingly.

    If you are accepted, you will receive information about the deadlines for enrolment (matriculation) at the university with your letter of admission.

    In the event of rejection, you will receive a letter of rejection with information on the succession procedure.

    They contact the International Office of the university at which they would like to study to check their higher education entrance qualification.

    If the certificate from the country of origin is not recognized, a so-called assessment test is carried out. Studienkollegs are offered throughout Germany to prepare students for this examination.

    You can also avoid this examination if you start your studies in your home country and then apply to a German university, for example, after completing your undergraduate studies and enter directly.

    Alternatively, you can attend a preparatory college in Germany and obtain your university entrance qualification there.
