In the state of Brandenburg, the subject "Ethics - Lifestyle - Religious Studies" (L-E-R) is a compulsory subject. The situation is different in all other federal states.

Pupils can be deregistered from L-E-R lessons if they attend religious education classes run by the Protestant regional church or a Catholic diocese or the "Humanistic Life Skills" classes run by the Humanist Association.

Proof must be provided that the pupil attends these classes.

The application is submitted at the end of the school year for the following school year. Students of religious age (from the age of 14) submit the application on their own responsibility.

Proof of participation in religious education or humanistic life skills lessons;

Age limit: Pupils submit the application from the age of 14 (so-called religious maturity) without the consent of their legal guardians

Proof of participation

- in Protestant religious education of the Protestant Church Berlin-Brandenburg, Silesian Upper Lusatia (EKBO) or

- Catholic religious education in the Archdiocese of Berlin, the Diocese of Magdeburg or the Diocese of Görlitz or

- in the "Humanistic Life Skills" classes of the Humanist Association.
