The head teacher may deferr a child from attending school once for one school year if it is to be expected that he or she will not be able to meet the requirements of grade 1 of primary school.

The decision is made on the basis of the school doctor's opinion, the school admission interview and other information available to the school.

Children who are deferred from attending school for one school year must attend a day-care centre or a rehabilitative early intervention measure. Proof of this must be submitted by the parents to the school.

The postponement of school attendance should only be the exception.

Finding that the child cannot meet the requirements of grade 1 of primary school

The procedure for admission to primary school takes place in the year before school enrolment:

Sept./Oct. – Language proficiency assessment at the Kita

Oct./April – school medical examination

Dec./Feb. – Registration at primary school/application for postponement of school attendance

End of May – Admission or restitution notice by the primary school

End of Feb. Registration in primary school

End of May – Admission or restitution notice by the primary school
