  • Detailed description

If you keep a dog, you are obliged to register it with the local authority for tax and regulatory purposes immediately after acquiring it or moving in.

The regulatory registration of dogs is intended solely to prevent danger, as injuries to humans or animals can be significant.

  • Requirements
    • You must have registered your place of residence in the administrative area.
    • You keep one or more dogs.
    • You submit all the required documents.
  • Documents

Dogs can be registered in writing, online or in person at the municipal administration.

The following details of the owner are recorded:

    - First name and surname,

    - date of birth,

    - place of birth and

    - the current address.

The following information about the dog must also be provided:

    - Name of the dog,

    - Sex of the dog,

    - breed of dog,

    - date of litter,

    - color of the dog and

    - the unchangeable number of the microchip.

The following information may be requested by the local authority in exceptional cases:

    - Certificate of good conduct of the owner for keeping dogs,

    - findings on the dangerousness of the dog and

    - Administrative orders in which conditions have been imposed regarding the dangerousness of the dog.

The local authority can request proof of this information.

  • Fees

Tax registration is governed by the dog tax statutes of the respective municipality.

The fee for regulatory registration is based on the fee schedule of the Ministry of the Interior and Municipalities - GebOMIK.

  • Process

After taking in or moving in with the dog, submit the application immediately in writing, online or in person to the responsible office.

The tax will then be assessed in the tax assessment notice. You will then receive the dog tag when the registration is approved.

According to § 2 HundehV, a dog older than 8 weeks must be permanently identified at the owner's expense using a microchip transponder in accordance with the ISO standard.

This identification is carried out by any veterinarian. Registration with one of the private register portals is either carried out as a service by your vet or must be arranged independently.

According to § 6 of the Dog Keeping Ordinance, a permit is required from the local regulatory authority for keeping a dog classified as dangerous.

There is no longer a ban on keeping so-called "fighting dogs" in the state of Brandenburg. The old regulations for category II list dogs (e.g. Rottweiler or Dobermann) also no longer apply. Nevertheless, dogs can still be classified as dangerous, regardless of their size or breed, if they have harmed a person or an animal, for example. In order to keep these dogs, which have been identified as dangerous, the owner must obtain a permit and subsequently fulfill certain conditions imposed by the regulatory authority, such as the presentation of liability insurance, the necessary expertise, proof of reliability, land protection, muzzle and/or leash requirement.

According to § 11 of the Dog Keeping Ordinance, the regulatory authority can prohibit the keeping of a dangerous dog.

Upon application to the local regulatory authority, it can be determined that the dog is no longer dangerous if no further incidents (e.g. biting incidents) can be determined after at least two years since a permit was issued and if a positive change in the dog's behavior (temperament test) can be assumed.
