There are no forms or online procedures for the acceptance of the state compulsory subject examination.

The state compulsory subject examination takes place as part of the first state examination in law and forms the conclusion of the university law degree with the university focus area examination. It is also a prerequisite for the legal preparatory service.

Admission to the state compulsory subject examination is subject to requirements in accordance with § 6 BbgJAG in conjunction with § 4 BbgJAO. The application for admission to the examination must be sent to the Joint Legal Examination Office of the States of Berlin and Brandenburg, which is responsible for the preparation and implementation of the state compulsory subject examination.

The state compulsory subject examination is divided into a written and an oral examination part. The subject of the examinations are the compulsory subjects specified in § 3 (2) sentence 1 BbgJAG. Successful completion of the written examination is a prerequisite for admission to the oral examination.

As part of the written part of the examination, seven supervisory tasks are to be carried out on seven working days with tasks on civil law, criminal law and public law. The work is carried out under supervision with a processing time of five hours each. You must achieve at least a point average of 3.50 points in the result and have received at least four points each in at least four supervisory tasks in order to pass the written examination.

The oral examination consists of a ten-minute lecture, a five-minute in-depth interview and an examination interview in three sections. Each section relates to a compulsory subject. The duration of the oral examination should be about 45 minutes. Four individual grades are awarded for the oral examination.

Following the oral examination, the examination board discusses the assessment and informs the examinee of the result with the final number from the written and oral examination.

The requirements for conducting and grading the state compulsory subject examination are regulated in §§ 6 to 9 BbgJAG. Further regulations are made in §§ 4 to 18 BbgJAO.

Please note that the university focus area examination is the responsibility of the university and is prepared and carried out by it.

No documents are required to carry out the state compulsory examination.

The acceptance of the state compulsory subject examination, consisting of a written and an oral part, is divided into the following procedural steps:

1. If you have applied for admission to the state compulsory subject examination at the GJPA and meet the requirements according to § 6 BbgJAG, you will receive a letter of admission by a simple letter about three to four weeks before the exam date with the invitation.
2. As part of the written examination, you must write seven supervisory papers over seven working days (three papers on the focus of civil law, two papers on the focus on criminal law and two papers on the focus on public law). The work is carried out under supervision with a processing time of five hours each. You must achieve at least a point average of 3.50 points and have received at least four points each in at least four supervisory papers in order to pass the written examination. This is the prerequisite for admission to the oral examination.
3. The results of the written examination will be communicated to you at the latest with the invitation to the oral examination.
4. There should be at least two weeks between the summons and the date of the oral examination. Before the oral examination, you should be given the opportunity to meet with the Chairman of the Examination Board for an interview.
5. The oral examination consists of a ten-minute lecture, a five-minute in-depth discussion of your presentation and an examination interview in three sections. Each section relates to a compulsory subject. The duration of the oral examination should be about 45 minutes.
6. If you have not passed the state compulsory subject examination once, you can repeat it once.

The respective dates for the written and oral examinations are determined by the GJPA. Please inform yourself about the website of the GJPA.

Admission to the state compulsory subject examination is subject to § 6 BbgJAG in conjunction with § 4 BbgJAO subject. Admission must be applied for in writing to the GJPA.

The respective university is responsible for the university focus area examination. Please observe the legal and procedural requirements there.

On the website of the GJPA you will find extensive information on the first legal examination.

In addition, the GJPA regularly offers information events. These usually take place on the first Tuesday in May and November of each year. Registration is required for this. The exact deadlines can be found on the website of the GJPA.
