Apply for a disability assessment

If you are affected by a disability, you can apply for a determination of your disability under certain conditions. This will also determine the degree of disability.

    Are you affected by a disability and have you been in poor health for more than 6 months? Then you can apply for a determination of your disability under certain conditions.

    As a result of the examination, a degree of disability may be determined for you. If the examination of the required documents shows a degree of disability of 50 or more, you can be issued with a severely disabled person's card.

    In addition to the degree of disability, special health restrictions may be determined in the course of the examination. If necessary, the corresponding marks will be entered on the severely disabled person's ID card.

    The following marks can be recognized by the competent authority and entitle you to further compensation for disadvantages:

    • G - considerable impairment of mobility in road traffic
    • aG - exceptional walking disability
    • H - helplessness
    • B - entitlement to a permanent escort when using public transport
    • RF - reduction of radio fees and/or telephone connection fees
    • GL - deafness
    • BL - blindness
    • TBL - deaf-blindness
  • Requirements
    • Your health has been impaired for more than 6 months in a way that makes it difficult or impossible for you to participate in social life.
    • Your health impairments are documented by medical records.
  • Documents
    • Informal application for determination of a disability
    • Application form of the responsible office
    • if available:
      • other proof of the degree of disability (e.g. pension certificate or corresponding administrative or court decision)
      • relevant medical documents, e.g. expert opinion
    • in case of representation: power of attorney or identity card of the person taking care of the applicant
    • for applicants without citizenship of an EU member state: proof of legal residence
  • Fees

    There are no costs involved.

  • Process

    You may apply for a disability determination in writing:

    • Submit the application to the appropriate office.
    • After the application has been submitted, the documents you have submitted will be examined.
    • If necessary, the competent office will independently request further documents to clarify the medical facts.
    • After your documents have been checked, you will receive a decision from the competent office, which may determine a degree of disability for you, as well as any characteristic signs.
