  • Detailed description

    The birth of a child must be reported to the registry office responsible for the place of birth.

    If your child is born in a hospital or other facility where obstetric care is provided, this facility will be responsible for registering the birth. In this case, you should enquire at the maternity facility in good time about which documents you need to bring with you to the delivery date. .

    If the birth does not take place in a hospital or other facility where obstetric care is provided (home birth), the birth must be registered in person by a parent with custody at the registry office within one week. If the parents are unable to register the birth, the birth must be registered by another person who was present at the birth.

  • Documents

    You will need the following documents:

    • for parents who are married to each other

      • Birth certificates of the parents

      • Marriage certificate or a certified printout from the marriage register

    • for parents who are not married to each other

      • Birth certificate of the mother

      • if paternity has already been recognized:

        • Declaration of acknowledgment of paternity and the mother's declaration of consent

        • Birth certificate of the father

        • if applicable, the declaration of custody

    • identity card, passport or a recognized passport replacement document of the parents

    • a certificate of birth issued by a doctor, midwife or maternity nurse, if they were present at the birth

    A marriage certificate must also be submitted if the marriage is now divorced or the husband is deceased.

  • Fees

    There is no charge for registering a birth at the registry office.

    Administrative fees are charged for issuing a birth certificate, which vary depending on the federal state.

    State of Brandenburg:

    Administrative fees are charged for the issuance of a birth certificate. These are based on subheadings 12.4.1 and 12.4.4 of the Annex to the Ordinance on charges for public services in the portfolio of the Ministry of the Interior and for Municipal Affairs (Schedule of Fees of the Ministry of the Interior and for Local Authorities - GebOMIK).

  • Deadline

    The birth of your child must be reported to the registry office responsible for the place of birth within one week.

    The day of birth is not included when calculating the notification period.

    If your child is stillborn, the notification must be made no later than the third working day after the birth.
