Driving license issued for the first time for category B

If you want to drive a passenger car up to 3,500 kilograms, you must apply for a class B driver's license.

  • Detailed description

    With the class B driver's license, you can drive motor vehicles (motor vehicles) with a maximum permissible mass of 3.5 tons. The motor vehicle must also be designed for no more than eight people (in addition to the person driving).

    You can transport trailers weighing less than 750 kilograms with a Class B driver's license. If the total mass of the vehicle combination is not more than 3.5 tons, the trailer may also weigh more than 750 kilograms.

    The class B driver's license is issued for an unlimited period of time.

  • Requirements
    • You must be in possession of a driving license class.
    • You must have your main residence in the Federal Republic of Germany.
    • The minimum age is 18 years. You can apply for the extension of your driver's license at the earliest 6 months before reaching the minimum age.

    State of Brandenburg:

    • You must have your main residence in the Federal Republic of Germany.
    • The minimum age is 18 years. You can apply for an extension of your driving licence no earlier than 6 months before reaching the minimum age.
  • Documents
    • valid identity card or passport (if necessary with current certificate of residence)
    • current biometric photo (size 45x35 mm, portrait format, frontal)
    • eye test certificate (not older than 2 years)
    • Proof of participation in a first aid course
    • Information about the driving school

  • Fees
    • The fee is based on the Fee Regulations for Road Traffic Measures (GebOSt).
    • If the driver's license is sent directly to the home address, an additional shipping fee will be charged.
  • Duration

    Depending on the fulfilment of the conditions for grant – esp. Completion of driver training and passing the theoretical and practical driving test.

    The card driving licence is produced centrally by Bundesdruckerei GmbH in Berlin. In order to obtain the new driving licence, you can apply for the card driving licence to be sent to you. Direct mailing is carried out by Bundesdruckerei GmbH.
